Traversing the 1500 mile gravel
ALCAN Highway
is the modern
day equivalent of a trek through
untamed wilderness. Unlike
tourists who fly
into Alaska or
take a cruise,
those making this
road trip will be treated to
mountain vistas,
wildlife,
Canadian culture,
incredible
Kluane Lake, and sourdough
pancakes. The ALCAN runs
through expanses
of forest so
remote that fires burn thousands
of acres
unchecked.

If you want to experience true
remote wilderness this pilgrimage
"North to Alaska"
is worth the
planning and daily driving
that
may
average 20-30 miles an hour.
My
only regret is not driving to
the
Arctic Circle (the 200 mile
drive
from Fairbanks is on a
logging road where help can
only be obtained from
passing
truckers).
